I’d like to put out an APB for my lawn. It’s sometimes difficult to spot amid hardened patches of nutrient-depleted soil. Don’t believe me? Look:

And because we have winters that last 14 months a year, the salt on our vehicles falls onto our driveway. When we shovel our driveway, the salt goes onto our lawn. Apparently grass doesn’t thrive on an abundance of NaCl. Look:

So, when the people of Scotts® Miracle-Gro contacted me about their EZ Seed grow-grass-anywhere contest, I was in. The initial conversation went something like this:
Them: We’d like you to grow grass somewhere that’s challenging.
Me (sipping some wine): Like my lawn?
Them: Sure, but also somewhere challenging.
Me (sipping more wine): Like my lawn?
Them: Sure…
As I may have mentioned, I’m a farm kid , and my brother is a professor of agriculture, specializing in growing good things and killing not-so-good things. Irony follows me like a pissed-off wasp.
But back to the Scotts® Miracle-Gro challenge.
I first decided to attack my salt-dead grass on the side of my driveway. Since the soil was as hard as cement, I hurt my back using a rake (once I found our rake, which was hiding behind a discarded doll). Next, I added Scotts® Turf Builder Enriched LawnSoil. Then, I sprinkled EZ Seed on top. EZ Seed is a 3-in 1-patching solution that contains (1) grass seed, (2) water-absorbing mulch (made from coir – coconut husk fibers), and (3) fertilizer. All in one bottle. It’s kind of like buying already-mixed sangria: all in one bottle.
Finally, I added water. I chose these products because they were dummy-proof. Yes, I’m the dummy.

Doing this was easier than baking brownies out of the box (which I also did this weekend). Parenting Tip: set the bar so low that when you “add water and stir,” your family thinks you’re Wonder Woman.
Guess what’s already growing: grass! EZ Seed to the rescue.

I’m even more excited about the WEIRD PLACE I’m growing grass. Can you guess?
Hint: I had to sacrifice something very dear to me.
So, if you’re Dad Camp or Little Miss Mama, look out. I’m so winning this friendly competition between the three of us.
And, dear reader, you can win something, too.

Full disclosure (which is still different from a full-frontal disclosure, in case you were wondering): The Scotts® Miracle-Gro Company has compensated me to write about their products, which will help cover some of my blog hosting costs. All opinions, dead grass and live grass are my own.
