Calgary made international news this past weekend as we (and much of southern Alberta) experienced the worst flood our province has ever seen.
My neighbourhood is untouched, thankfully, but many (including downtown) were submerged. It was unprecedented. My friend Brooke has some images up on her blog, Brooklyn Berry Designs.
Last night, I sat down and wrote a piece for the Huffington Post, entitled 10 Reasons Why Calgarians Love Mayor Nenshi (or, How to Be a Leader). Check it out.
Please keep the strong people of this beautiful province in your thoughts and prayers.
Finally, this is a humor blog, and although there isn’t anything humorous about this situation, I was a little amused at the placement of the Tony Robbins ad in the Calgary Herald this morning:
Nothing wrong with finding a little humor in a tough situation. We had terrible floods in my city in 1993. It’s just a memory now, and you guys will get through it as well! I’ll say a prayer for you folks though, if Jesus even listens to me anymore, that is.
The only thing more amazing than the power of the flooding has been the strength of the community. Not surprising at all, but amazing nonetheless. Can’t wait to read your Nenshi post – my crush on him is getting outta control…
Loved, loved, loved your piece, “10 Reasons Why Calgarians Love Mayor Nenshi.”
Leanne your thoughtful sensitivity really works. We’re in Tokyo now worrying about all that’s going on in our home town. Take good care of yourselves.
The doubters say what climate change. Ask your neighbors in the affected area if they doubt the change.
Oh, Leanne, my prayers are with all of you. Having been through Katrina, I understand the layers of emotion, from grief and loss for those whose homes were flooded, to survivor’s guilt for those who weren’t. But the greatest lesson of all is learning that laughter is a great healer.
What a great guy! I will now always think of your amazing mayor when reading Pete the Cat – that was so good.
And we apparently aren’t in the middle of climate change because…?
Hope everything dries out & not too much disruption – what a horrendous thing to have happen!
Weather’s topsy turvy all over the world this year. Here in Wellington we just had a 3-day storm with 200 km/h winds. Commuter rail’s still munted, a week later. But there was a kind of funny side to it. In the middle of it, a guy turned up at our front door to cold-call sell us a service we already had…
Wow, your piece on Mayor Nenshi gave me goosebumps. Even though I’m an East Coaster, he’s someone I’ll keep tabs on, inspiring government! Wish we all had some of that!
Glad you’re dry – Alberta has set a great example of how to handle a crisis. 🙂
I was worried about you in the flooding. We here in San Antonio recently underwent severe flooding and know how disastrous it can be. Yours is so much worse than ours was. Your mayor is fabulous. You must be so proud of him. Stay safe and dry. The people of Calgary and Alberta are in my prayers.
Glad to hear you and your family are okay, Leanne!

‘One day can change everything.’ Well said, Tony. Well said
Leanne, as a Canadian and as a relative of a few fine Calgarians, I had to reblog this.
Homelessness never leaves us, but mushrooms in the wake of a disaster. As such, I’m donating my author proceeds from this months sales of my short story, Crowning Glory, to Habitat for Humanity, because one home can change everything, too.
I hope your readers will spread the word, and, with all due respect and the hope that you don’t object, I include the link here.

How awful! Thoughts and prayers to our northern neighbors. Glad you and your family stayed dry.
I posted the article to facebook. I thought it was refreshing to have someone in government that was so well thought of. I’m sorry he’s in Canada.
Humor is a shield, Leanne. Period.
