Today, I have an announcement. But in the tradition of the Academy Awards and long drum rolls, I’m going to delay making it.
First, some history.
THING 1 & THING 2: THE TIMELINE
2004: I’m pregnant with twins. My husband and I refer to our unborn babes as Alpha and Omega, Leftie and Rightie, and Thing 1 and Thing 2.
Fast forward 5 years.
2009: I start blogging, and occasionally refer to William and Vivian as Thing 1 and Thing 2.
2010: My husband buys me Thing 1 and Thing 2 at a flea market. They become rather iconic at Ironic Mom.
2011:
- Thing 1 and Thing 2 go to Hollywood with my sister and me. Half of of Hollywood poses for photo ops with them, including an Elvis impersonator and 2 LAPD officers.

- I throw Thing 1 and Thing 2 in the wash and they come out looking like this:

- Kelly K comes to my rescue and finds replacements Things on eBay. We ship them to her house in Texas. She takes fantastic photos and blogs about their adventure.
- I announce this:
Yes, Thing 1 & Thing 2, the old pair with the Estelle Getty hair, hope to come and see you. To sign up, leave a comment on Thing 1 & Thing 2’s Excellent Adventure page. There you will find more information, only some of it repetitive.
Alas, my son would likely do heinous experiments on Thing 1 and my daughter would not give back Thing 2. Looking forward to seeing what happens on the adventure!
I hear ya.
We did this in 2000 while on peace keeping duty. In Bosnia with our officers coffee mug. Of course he wasn’t in on it as we kind of “borrowed ” it. Then we would pass it too each other aswe were going on leave and send pictures of it from around the world. We even thretend to wash it on him. Good times
This had me laughing, Mark. What a brilliant way to have fun at the gentle expense of your Officer!
Sounds like fun. Can you pack me in there too? I would offer to host but worry my boys might use Thing 1 and Thing 2 for batting practice. Can’t wait to see where the Things end up!
I know. I’m envious of their 3-continent journey already.
this is a hilarious idea ๐
A friend of mine does this with a lawn gnome. Though it entirely freaked me out when I travelled with her, as its eyes follow you when you’re moving around the room.
Lawn gnome! Fantastic!
What an awesome idea! I’d love to participate but must agree with Lori above. My Izzy would never allow them to leave the house once they got in. I may have to sit back and see how this plays out from the sidelines.
You are a very thoughtful dad.
What a fabulous idea. Would it be okay if hubby and I used Thing 1 and Thing 2 to spice up our lovemaking? Oh wait, then they’d have to go back into the wash and spin cycle which would bring you back to do-oh-oh-oh. ๐
Doh! ๐
For you Renee, the sky’s the limit…
As for your husband, well…
I selected you for the Blog Love award, Go here to check it out. http://mairedubhtx.wordpress.com/2011/06/24/blog-love/
Thank you so much!
I’m honoured!
The Beast would probably try to eat them… ๐
I get that.
Sounds like your creative cylinders are firing away, young lady! Great plan.
Well, first I have to hope that the Canadian Postal Strike gets resolved. Sigh.
I only wish I’d been there to see the smile on your face when they finally arrived. ๐
So glad a spur of the moment Googling made the Great Adventure idea possible.
I’ll take a turn again, when my kids are past the “taste test toy” phase….
Let me know! I adore the new Things, though!
I can’t play because I’m not sure where I’ll be in the next couple of months… but I’m looking forward to following along with their Excellent Adventure!
Let me know when you’re settled…
How quickly can you get them to Vancouver? Disney Cruise departs on Tuesday morning.
Bon Voyage! And good luck in the half tomorrow!
haha, I like your idea. I’d also love to host Thing 1 and Thing 2 and show them the Bavarian surroundings ๐
Just let me know if they are allowed to travel to Europe ๐
Absolutely! Make sure you add the name on the page!
The hair after the spin cycle cracks me up! They look like wild party people. Can’t wait to have them visit. They are so famous!
Great idea, Leanne…unfortunately, we still haven’t fully recovered from The Jolie’s visit to Saint John in January: http://writerwoman61.wordpress.com/the-jolie-pez-project/
Looking forward to following the Things’ adventures though…
