When Children Won't Stay In Bed

One thing I’ve realized in the six years I’ve been parenting is that there are some bizarre statements that come reeling out of my mouth.

Today, I’m starting a new feature called Whiteboard Wednesday. Now I know there are some sports websites that give you a behind-the-scenes look on Whiteboard Wednesdays; this is nothing like that.

Whiteboard Wednesday is when I’ll take a moment midweek to document some of those unusual words and phrases. I figure it’s an appropriate medium to use: not only am I a teacher who uses one daily, but I am also a mom who says things that I’d like to erase.

So, with a preamble that is far too long, welcome to Whiteboard Wednesday.

When Children Won't Stay in Bed

Have you said anything bizarre lately? Or anything you’d like to erase?

I guess with 2 sons it’s to be expected, but I really wish I didn’t have to say, “get your hand out of your pants” so often!

What a fun idea for a meme – if only it was so easy to erase the things we say!

Yes, I could use a big eraser some days.

our “favorite” comment to the boys (I don’t remember having to use it on the girls) is “if it’s not spurting, dangling or on fire, don’t bother me when i’m on the phone”. Because you know those peaceful quiet kids playing nicely on the floor will miraculously begin to re-enact the Titanic sinking when I get on the phone to make that appointment i’ve delayed for several days.

Spurting? I assume that comes from experience…:)

I have been reading your blog for a little while now and have been tempted to comment, but would comment on so many because I relate to so much. I have five kids~four of whom get out of bed regularly. The oldest just stopped about a year ago, but still wanders in on occassion. With five I say many things that I can’t post, but I’m famous for saying the following when they get out of bed and I’m exhausted~ “the only reason you should come out of that room again is if the house is on fire!”

LOL. Love the fire comment. And 5 kids? Wow. You have my respect!

    Are you on fire?
Is there a bone sticking out of your skin?
Is there blood GUSHING from any part of your body?

    No?

    GET BACK IN BED.

I like the imagery with the “bone sticking out of your skin.” Made me laugh!

LMAO! Your post reminded me how hard it is to gross out moms. We’ve all been-there-seen-worse…

I can’t think of anything off the top of my head (I’m so much more fascinated by what my children say to me), but I am TOTALLY using that line (on your whiteboard) tonight. So over bedtime.

Hope bedtime went well. Of course, mine are still wandering the halls waiting for more empty threats.

Filing that one away. No strange phrases other than my insistence on calling Theo “Papamama,” which can only serve to confuse him for obvious reasons!

Might have to try Papamama out here and see what reaction I get!

I love this idea! I remember Madelyn going through a phase when she was 2-3 where she would come over to us and get extreamly close to our faces and on more than one occasion she headbutted us – accidentally? I remember saying to her more than once “Don’t headbutt me!” I never thought I’d say that to my kids.

My step-kids used to wake me up in the middle of the night for all kinds of reasons including wanting to inform me that they have to go to the bathroom. I eventually told them that they only time that it is acceptable to wake me up in the middle of the night is if blood is involved. After a few less than pleasant experiences of waking me up without blood involved, they now follow the rule.

And when blood is involved… I may not be happy but I try to keep my crankiness to myself. And unfortunately, my step-son gets bloody noses so sometimes blood really is involved.

Great concept (alliteration just makes it sound more specialer, doesn’t it?). What I say when our kids get out of bed typically isn’t real funny, or appropriate, but they’ve said some hellaciously funny things after getting out of bed, such as Slim wandering out when he was four and asking, “Dad, was Yoda comfortable holding babies?”

I look forward to more Whiteboard Wednesdays.

‘who put the baby in the toilet??!!’ lol i eventually have to throw the baby doll coz with 5 boys in the house and just one girl, the lads end up annoying the girl and most often than not–if the doll made its way to the boys’s stuff, it ends up somewhere mostly the toilet bowl.
