I love found humor, observing the seemingly innocuous and letting my twisted mind do its thing and discover something laughable.
Let me assure you: humor is everywhere.
Here are some of the places in my life where I’ve found humor recently:
On my kids’ bedroom door:

In a bookstore:
Although it says “ages 14 and up” on the back, I found this Lady Gaga cut-out doll kit in the children’s clearance section, beside Dora and Barbie books.

In the library
The local branch of my public library ran a New Year’s Resolution post-it display.
Ode to irony:

Ode to parents and children with senses of humor:

In my own house:

It’s out there, waiting to be discovered.

Where do you find humor? Any post-it resolutions?
I hope you bought the Lady Gaga paper dolls!
I didn’t, and I regret it! Only $6.99!
Love the post it notes!
When I first started blogging, I decided I would take my 300 sunny days we have in Colorado and share it! I try to look for the funny side of life just like you do!!
Colorado sounds like it gets similar sun-days as Calgary. Lovely, isn’t it!
Thanks for the smiles. Love the post it note resolutions.
I laughed and grieved as i read your obit for perky boobs. 😉
Now my school’s Spanish teacher is doing post-it resolutions in espanol and our librarian doing book post-its. All from the Calgary Public Library. Love that place.
Perky boobs. I think I had those for about 7 days.
Ah yes! The good old days of perky boobs.
When I had them, my husband was happier and my students’ grades were better. I guess I provided a form of motivation 😉 . And I thought they were just attentive learners. Do you ever find students staring?
Sometimes I lose the “funny.” Kids have a way of bringing it back – even teenagers – except when they’re part of why I’ve lost it (um, and lost it).
Fortunately, it generally returns when least expected. I will say, on Day 6 of a Migraine, I’m not finding the Excedrin recall to be the least bit amusing!
Funny is a luxury of feeling well. A couple years ago, I lost my funny for 2 months. It was not a good time. I hear you about your migraine.
I am feeling a little sapped for funny right now. Youbactuallybhelp me to remember that it is everywhere.
Even in the Victoria’s Secret catalogue.
Because, seriously, what woman would wear that bikini? 😉
It is, but there are times when it takes too much effort to see it. I get that.
And I don’t where bikinis. Unless we’re talking about underwear.
The lady gaga doll is a hoot! Good grief.
I think I need to start saying “good grief”
I love finding humor in everything – great post!! Laughter is the key to survival, I am convinced!
Certainly to surviving parenthood and other small disasters.
I found humor in a fortune cookie. I don’t remember what the fortune said but on the back was the Chinese pronunciation for the words you say when you answer the phone – “tai won how”. I started answering calls from my kids that way.
At my father’s retirement service, the priest who gave the benediction was Chinese and had a heavy accent. (Here come’s the politically incorrect part of the story) As he was praying, and when my head should have been bowed, I looked up to see my children looking at me. I mouthed “tai won how” to them and the three of us lost it. My husband was not amused.
Does this make me a bad mother?
It makes you a fun mother. Getting the giggles in church is my specialty. It makes me feel like I’m both a teen and a Muppet.
I love the post-it resolutions and the Lady Gaga paper dolls.
Your post today is such a great reminder. You’re right. Humor is everywhere. But you have to be open to seeing it–and laughing. I’ve been battling off a funk lately. I’ve been down, and everything I see confirms my crappy mood. It’s time for a shift. I guess I could put that on a resolution post-it: Look for things that make me laugh.
Happy New Year!
It is hard – if not impossible – to find humor when you’re down and out. I’ve been there. Trust that it’ll return. It will. I waited 2 months a couple of years ago. It came back. Slowly, then full force. I’ll lose it again, no doubt. Hopefully then I’ll have more faith that it’ll return.
I agree with the first post-it poster… post-it notes will be the downfall of civilization.
Sounds like something that Malcolm Gladwell would analyze!
I do not even want to know what that pink and blue thing is. It just looks wrong.
I know. I explained my theory to Liz (below)
I want to be this mom who falls asleep in the day.
Probably.
Afternoon naps. I could use one of those. Today is a day I wanted to curl up with a book.
What IS that pink thing? I know that you know what I THINK it looks like…but what IS it?
After close examination, I think it’s a mini-brain on a spring. Which is a hilarious metaphor, really.
My 2 year old is a source of endless humor… she is learning new words but all her “s” sounds come out as “sh” sounds. She likes her “shoup” (soup) warm and her dog to “sh*t” (sit).
My kids can’t say the “th” sound as it is not in their native language. We spend hours practicing the, them, there, those, then, that instead of da, dem, dere, dose, den, dat ….
Does tupidity count as humour? A MP saying we need to teach migrants not to smell and how to queue was stupid……………… and funny, really…….. 😆
Great article!
Nice post.
I like the no boys allowed sign. How can I get one for my daughter’s room ?
